Winter storm approaches MIT

MIT remains open today as Cambridge is predicted to get 4-9 inches of snow, according to National Weather Service forecasts. Snow emergencies have been declared in both Cambridge (effective at noon) and Boston (effective at 8 a.m.). During snow emergencies, parked cars must be moved off snow evacuation routes.

Snow will start after 11 a.m., and will continue through the afternoon and evening, probably ending before 2 a.m., according to an early-morning National Weather Service forecast. Winds will increase to around 20-25 mph later today, with gusts tonight reaching 36 mph. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect, starting 8 a.m. today and ending 1 p.m. on Thursday.

On campus, several roads are designated snow emergency routes, including Mass Ave., Wadsworth St., Main St., part of Vassar St. and part of Ames St. Cars are prohibited from parking on these roads during a snow emergency. A map of emergency routes is available at http://www.cambridgema.gov/pdf/tpat_snowemergstsmap.pdf.

In Boston, many streets, including Mass Ave., Beacon St. and Commonwealth Ave. must be kept clear. Boston provides maps at http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parking/.

MIT asks that drivers move their cars to parking garages during snow emergencies, so Facilities can quickly clear the outside lots. For more information about parking at MIT during a snow emergency, visit http://web.mit.edu/facilities/transportation/parking/regulations.html.
