Figure Skating hosts
Eastern Sectionals

Over the weekend, the MIT Figure Skating Club hosted the Eastern Sectional Intercollegiate Team Skating Competition. The USFSA-sanctioned competition included skaters from 20 universities on the East Coast. The Engineers last hosted this event two years ago, when they finished sixth overall out of 13 schools; this time, they finished seventh with 28 points. The University of Delaware, Dartmouth, and Boston University took the top three spots with 125, 100, and 88 points, respectively.

The competition consisted of both individual and team events. In the Pre-Juvenile Ladies division, Aviva R. Siegel ’13 and Maria de Soria finished first and second, and Chantine A. Akiyama ’15 finished first in her group in the Senior Ladies division. Curran Y. Oi ’13 took first in the Senior Men’s Championships. Shawn Pan ’12, Ashlee C. Greene ’13, Gwen Getliffe, and Nahhyun S. “Sarah” Yu ’15 also competed for MIT. In the team events, MIT finished third in High Team Maneuvers, fourth in Intermediate, and eighth in Low.

The next Sectional Competition will be held from March 17-18 at the University of Delaware, and the National Championships will occur April 21-22 at Colorado College.

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Compete in NEWMACs

This past weekend the MIT Men’s and the MIT Women’s Track and Field teams competed in the New England Division III championships. The men traveled to Springfield College, where they finished in second place with 95 points, 8 points shy of Bates College. Tyler S. Singer-Clark ’14 won the both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and, along with Brian M. Gager ’13, Patrick K. Marx ’13, and Nick A. Diamantoni ’15, won the 4x400 meter relay. Chinedum K. Umachi ’12 also had a fantastic performance, winning the hammer throw with a personal best, and meet record throw of 63-7 ½.

The women also performed well, competing at Smith College, and missing out on first place by just one point. The women took first place in the 4x400, 4x200, and 4x800-meter relays. Portia M. Jones ’12, Martha M. Gross ’12, Jamie L. Simmons ’12, and Jacqueline A. Brew ’14 set MIT and meet records in the 4x200 with a time of 1:43.51. Be sure to cheer on both teams as they compete next weekend in the All-New England meet, in which they will compete against Division I, II, and III teams.
