IS&T offers Dropbox for Business to MIT
Last Thursday, MIT and Dropbox, the file hosting service, announced a new program to provide Dropbox for Business to all MIT students, staff, and faculty. All MIT users will fall under what Dropbox calls a ‘team.’ According to MIT, Dropbox for Business will offer unlimited storage space and recovery of deleted files to all users.
Dropbox was founded by Arash Ferdowsi ’08 and Drew Houston ‘05. Houston spoke at Commencement in 2013.
The new program began in a pilot phase in the Operations and Research group at Information Systems & Technology. The pilot expanded to cover all of IS&T and other select groups on campus such as the Office of the Vice President, the MIT Libraries and Professor Timothy Lu’s research group.
MIT users can enroll in the MIT team while retaining their own personal accounts. IS&T has suggested that users separate files stored in the accounts linked to the MIT team and personal accounts in the same way that they separate their MIT and personal emails. IS&T stressed that not all files are appropriate for storage on Dropbox such as files protected by HIPAA, social security numbers, and other legally protected data. Like MIT email accounts, the Dropbox accounts will be deactivated when students graduate or employees leave MIT.
