Women’s soccer falls to #1 WashU, drops to 9-2-1
Engineers look to protect undefeated 2026 NEWMAC season
MIT women’s soccer is 9–2–1 to start their season after Wednesday’s loss to #1 Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), an earlier loss to Tufts University, and a draw with New York University in early September. Despite those two steps out of the win column, the Engineers have put up dominant performances one after the other, leading opponents 34–6 in goals this season.
Freshman standout Claire Zhang ’30 leads the Engineers in goals scored or assisted, helping the team to 18 points this season. Senior Arianna Doss ’27 has also been a major contributor, helping the Engineers score 13 points. The whole team has been essential to the season's success so far, with 16 players contributing at least one point.
On Wednesday, the Engineers faced a highly anticipated matchup against #1 WashU. It was a close game, tied 1-1 at the half, but the WashU Bears walked away with a 2-1 win.
Hoping to re-enter the win column, women’s soccer is scheduled to play a NEWMAC competitor in each of their next three scheduled games, with Salve Regina on Oct. 7, Springfield on Oct. 10, and Clark University on Oct. 14. The Engineers are currently 3-0 in NEWMAC conference play, following victories over Smith College, Wellesley College, and the United States Coast Guard Academy earlier in the season.
