Crisp weather for Family Weekend and lots of sunshine next week

Today and tomorrow, we will continue to deal with elevated northerly winds from the storm offshore. Yesterday, the National Hurricane Center classified the storm as Subtropical Storm Josephine, and it is expected to pass about 150 miles to the southeast of Nantucket today. You might wonder what a subtropical storm is and how it is any different from a tropical storm: Josephine possesses some tropical characteristics, such as getting energy from warm ocean waters, as well as non-tropical features like a lack of symmetry and broad windfield. Additionally, the storm gets energy from the clash between cold and warm air masses, which is a distinctly subtropical feature. What makes a nor’easter different from both of these is a connection to a frontal boundary, which is the reason why the nor’easter last month was not classified as subtropical.

As we head into Family Weekend, the highs will be running in the upper 50s and low 60s, with morning lows in the 30s. Dewpoints are expected to be low, meaning the air will have a cool autumn crisp to it. Additionally, the peak of fall foliage is approaching in Boston, with it likely occurring in the next week or so. As we approach the end of daylight saving time on Nov. 1, we’re losing daylight fast — nearly three minutes every day.
